jobs.utah.gov

Project Description

The Department of Workforce Services for the state of Utah posted a comprehensive "job search" and "employee search" website in the Autumn of 2002. Identified as jobs.utah.gov. Media Solutions was contracted to produce a collateral, interactive CD-ROM that would heighten awareness of jobs.utah.gov and drive visitors to the site.

The Challenge

The interactive CD-ROM was intended to increase awareness about jobs.utah.gov while highlighting the website's advantages and benfits to Utah citizens. It was not designed to replicate the website or explain how it worked. Thus, our challenge was to create an engaging media piece that was relevant to the different types of potential visitors to the jobs site, and that provided rapid and random access to information about the services available. Our specific challenges included:

  • Tailoring the CD-ROM to either job seekers or potential employers.
  • Customizing the media to have personal relevance to each CD-ROM user.
  • Collapsing the service benefits of jobs.utah.gov into concise, easily accessed subsections.
  • Designing the CD-ROM with visual appeal and fast, efficient interaction.

The Solution

Media Solutions conceptualized the CD-ROM with two main branches: one for job seekers and one for potential employers. Each branch would house information specific to that type of user. Within each branch, the navigation of the CD was further divided into video-based "guides" who were created to match the typical situation of a job seeker or potential employer, thus allowing a user to pick a "guide" who best represented their needs.

  • An introductory full-screen video clip was used to entice the user to proceed.
  • The user was asked to choose whether they were a "Job Seeker" or "Potential Employer"
  • "Potential Employers" had three "guides" to choose from:
    1. Large business employer
    2. Small business owner
    3. HR professional
  • "Potential Employers" received information about three main advantages of jobs.utah.gov:
    1. Convenient and fast
    2. No fee
    3. Résumé searches
  • "Job Seekers" had five "guides" to choose from based on different categories of job seekers:
    1. Skilled/Technical Professional
    2. First Job
    3. Mid-Level Professional
    4. Beginning Career
    5. Part-Time Job
  • "Job Seekers" received information about three main advantages of jobs.utah.gov:
    1. Easy to use, anytime
    2. No fee
    3. New jobs posted daily
  • Users could select any guide or portion of the CD-ROM to view.
  • For users with active Internet connections, a direct link to the jobs.utah.gov website was provided.
  • The CD materials were created in HTML and were designed to open and run in a user's standard web browser software.
  • The CD combined video clips with text-based, bulleted comments that appeared synchronously with each other.

Other Benefits

The CD-ROM could be used as a "take away" item in job fairs, promotional events, or direct mail campaigns. It also provided a quickly viewed introduction to the jobs.utah.gov services. The CD caddy or "taxi" was an innovative "pop-up" design that drew attention to the URL for the Workforce Services website. A total of 5000 copies of the CD-ROM were printed for distribution.
