Digital Video for the Web Workshop

Project Description

As part of an ongoing mission to share our expertise, the New Media Group has designed a Digital Video for the Web workshop.

Digital Video for the Web

The Challenge

There are many conceptions and misconceptions about the creation and use of digital video/audio in web sites. Because Media Solutions includes digital video transcoding and streaming in its services, we felt the need to formalize the discussion about creating and embedding digital video for the web.

  • Reinforce the factors that influence and optimize the quality of digital video delivered over the Internet
  • Review the digital video formats available to web producers
  • Compare and Contrast samples of movies

The Solution

The New Media Integration Group wrote a publicly available web site with background information and current production methods for digital video delivered over the internet. The site is updated as needed and is used both for independent study or as part of workshops we teach. The site includes:

  • Identification of the need for digital video in web sites
  • Production workflows
  • End user computer issues
  • Internet pipeline data rates
  • Media architectures
  • Meaning of streaming
  • Video standards
  • Video formats
  • Quality of source materials
  • Effect of screen activity
  • Ingestion equipment
  • Codecs
  • Editing & compression tools
  • Movie data rates
  • Quality of compression issues
  • Video frame rates
  • Video frame sizes
  • Audio sample rates
  • Audio sample sizes
  • Optimizers
  • Storage requirements

Other Benefits

The entire site contains hundreds of links to outside resources and vendors involved in digital video formats and production. Additionally, the site contains many dozens of video samples to help in the comparison and contrast of file formats and internet pipeline speeds.
